The Cambridge Primary Grade 5 (Stage 5) Math curriculum builds number sense, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. Core objectives include mastering large numbers (up to 1,000,000), calculating with fractions and decimals, calculating area and volume, and representing data through statistical graphs.
Course Outline
- Place Value: Read, write, order, and compare numbers up to 1,000,000 and decimals to three places.
- Number Theory: Recognize and work with multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers, and cube numbers.
- Calculations: Multiply 4-digit by 1-digit numbers and 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. Divide up to 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and interpret remainders.
- Fractions and Percentages: Compare and order fractions, convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, add/subtract fractions with different denominators, and understand basic percentages.
2. Geometry and Measurement
- Shapes and Symmetry: Identify 3D shapes from 2D representations, understand nets, and recognize reflective and rotational symmetry.
- Angles: Estimate, measure, and draw angles using a protractor, and understand angles on a straight line or at a point.
- Perimeter, Area, and Volume: Calculate the perimeter, area, and volume of regular 2D and 3D shapes (e.g., rectangles, cuboids).
- Measurement: Convert between standard metric units (e.g., kg to g, km to m) and solve problems involving time, including reading timetables.
3. Statistics and Probability
- Data Handling: Plan investigations and collect, organize, and represent data using tally charts, frequency tables, bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts.
- Data Analysis: Find and interpret the mode and median of a data set to summarize information.
- Probability: Use the language of likelihood and risk to describe and compare familiar events and outcomes.
4. Problem Solving and Thinking Mathematically
- Develop mental strategies, estimate before calculating, and apply mathematical knowledge to real-life situations and logic puzzles.
