The Cambridge Primary Science Grade 5 curriculum builds core scientific knowledge and inquiry skills across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. It challenges students to plan investigations, make predictions, and record data. Students also evaluate evidence and learn to recognize patterns.
Course Outline
Biology
- Plants: Understand plant life cycles, identifying flower parts (stamen, carpel, stigma, ovary) and exploring pollination, fertilization, seed production, and dispersal.
- Humans and Animals: Describe the human digestive system, recognize the functions of its organs, and explore what constitutes a balanced diet and how to maintain health.
- Living Things in their Environment: Investigate how animals and plants adapt to different environments and seasonal changes.
2. Chemistry
- States of Matter: Investigate materials and learn about the properties of water.
- Material Properties: Understand evaporation and condensation, how the particle model explains states of matter, and how to form and separate solutions.
3. Physics
- Forces: Measure forces using Newtons, and explore the effects of gravity, friction, air resistance, and water resistance.
- Sound: Understand how sound is produced by vibrations, and explore how pitch, volume, and the medium of transmission affect what we hear.
- Light: Learn that light travels in straight lines, explore how light reflects, and investigate the formation of shadows using transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.
- Earth and Space: Explore the movement of the Earth and the Moon, and understand how the Earth's rotation causes day and night.
4. Scientific Enquiry
- Ideas and Evidence: Understand how scientists ask questions and use evidence from investigations to answer them.
- Practical Work: Plan fair tests, make safe predictions, and use equipment to make careful, repeated observations and measurements.
- Presenting Results: Record data and present findings using tables, bar charts, and line graphs to draw simple conclusions.
