About this course

The Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478) course is split into two main sections: Paper 1 (Computer Systems) and Paper 2 (Algorithms, Programming and Logic). [1] (https://www.cambridgeinternational.org/programmes-and-qualifications/cambridge-igcse-computer-science-0478/), [2] (https://www.kwickprep.com/blog/igcse-computer-science-0478-guide/)Each paper is worth 50% of the total grade, lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes, and is graded on a scale from A* to G

Course Outline

Paper 1: Computer Systems (Theory)

This paper covers the foundational hardware and software components that make up computer systems and networks.

  1. Data Representation: Binary, hexadecimal, and how text, images, and sound are encoded and stored.
  2. Data Transmission: Types and methods of data transmission, error-checking methods (like parity checks and ARQ), and internet technologies.
  3. Hardware: The CPU architecture (Von Neumann model), memory types (RAM, ROM, cache), and input/output devices.
  4. Software: Operating systems, system software, and the role of application software.
  5. Internet and the World Wide Web: Difference between the internet and web, URLs, HTTP/HTTPS, and web browsers.
  6. Automated Systems and Artificial Intelligence: Use of sensors, actuators, and basic concepts of AI.

Paper 2: Algorithms, Programming and Logic (Problem-Solving)

This paper tests your practical problem-solving skills, logic circuits, and programming proficiency (typically using pseudocode and Python).

  1. Algorithms and Problem-Solving: Designing algorithms, flowcharts, trace tables, and identifying/correcting errors.
  2. Programming: Programming concepts, variables, constants, arrays, selection, iteration, and subroutines (functions/procedures).
  3. Databases: Relational database structures, basic SQL queries, and data retrieval.
  4. Boolean Logic: Logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR), truth tables, and constructing logic circuits.
