The Cambridge Grade 5 (Stage 5) English curriculum develops foundational communication through four core areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students learn to analyze various text types (fiction, non-fiction, poetry), expand their vocabulary, apply advanced grammar rules, and express themselves creatively and logically.
Course Outline
Reading & Comprehension
- Analyze Texts: Identify and comment on a writer's use of language, mood, and point of view.
- Deduce Meaning: Use context clues, root words, prefixes, and suffixes to understand unfamiliar vocabulary.
- Text Types: Skim and scan to compare features of diverse texts, including myths, legends, fables, classic literature, and non-fiction reports.
2. Writing
- Composition: Plan and write cohesive narratives, formal arguments, and non-fiction texts (e.g., instructions, explanations) using descriptive language.
- Grammar & Syntax: Use simple, compound, and complex sentences. Master punctuation for dialogue (inverted commas) and possessive/contractive apostrophes.
- Figurative Language: Incorporate similes, metaphors, and personification, particularly in poetry writing.
3. Speaking & Listening
- Oral Communication: Tell stories using techniques like pacing and repetition.
- Presenting Arguments: Deliver a spoken argument, sequence points logically, and defend views with evidence.
- Active Listening: Listen to interviews and personal accounts to summarize information and interpret spoken cues.
