Course Outline
Course Aims and Objectives
- Develop fluency: Gain confidence and a positive attitude toward numbers, operations, and mathematical reasoning.
- Problem-solving: Apply creative and resilient strategies to analyze and solve complex problems.
- Communication: Express mathematical concepts, arguments, and solutions clearly and precisely.
- Assessment Objectives:
- AO1 (Knowledge and understanding): Weighted at 60–70% for Core and 40–50% for Extended.
- AO2 (Analysis and communication): Weighted at 30–40% for Core and 50–60% for Extended.
Syllabus Outline (Core & Extended Tiers)
The curriculum is divided into core topic areas, with Extended tiers including deeper analytical requirements and calculus additions:
- Number: Types of numbers, fractions, percentages, ratios, standard form, and financial arithmetic (simple/compound interest). Extended additions: Surds, growth/decay, and set notation/Venn diagrams.
- Algebra & Graphs: Linear equations, inequalities, sequences, and basic graphs. Extended additions: Quadratic equations, algebraic fractions, functions (domain/range), and introductory differentiation.
- Coordinate Geometry: Gradients, parallel/perpendicular lines, and distance-time graphs.
- Geometry: Symmetry, angle properties, polygons, geometric constructions, bearings, and circle theorems.
- Mensuration: Perimeters, areas, surface volumes, and compound 2D/3D shapes.
- Trigonometry: Pythagoras' theorem, right-angled triangles, sine and cosine rules. Extended additions: Exact trigonometric values, 3D applications, and trig graphs.
- Vectors & Transformations: Reflections, rotations, translations, enlargements, and vector geometry.
- Probability: Basic probability, combined events, and tree diagrams. Extended additions: Conditional probability.
- Statistics: Mean, median, mode, frequency tables, bar charts, and pie charts. Extended additions: Histograms and cumulative frequency diagrams.
